Who We Are

When people describe women or the idea of a woman, they too often describe history’s stereotypical definition of a white woman.  When Black women are discussed, we are discussed as a sub-set, a category of women, but not as woman itself.  We’re tired of it.  We are women.  And these are our stories.

We are a mother and her two daughters; two sisters and their mother.  We are three Black women writers sharing our stories of motherhood and marriage, transitioning into a professional career, and starting over late in life.

I don’t think a female running a house is a problem, a broken family. It’s perceived as one because of the notion that a head is a man.” -Toni Morrison

MissGradStudent — I am a Harvard graduate school student trying to figure out life.  My 4103221-Young-Happy-African-American-Female-Student-Holding-Graduation-Certificate-Stock-Photoposts are about transitioning into adulthood, growing up.  They’re about what it’s like to be a Black woman in a higher education institution dominated by white men.  My posts are about me drafting a blueprint for my future all alone, with no legacy to guide me.  My posts are about travels and friendships.  I’m about finding my place in the world, searching for permanence.

“What kept me sane was knowing that things would change, and it was a question of keeping myself together until they did.” -Nina Simone

MrsMillenialMom — I’m a wife and mother who happens to ride the fuck out of this roller 1coaster called life. I generally don’t feel people hear me or listen well to what I have to say. I write to express my thoughts and have been doing so since I was a child. I share my personal life experiences and childhood to inspire and help other people who may be in similar situations without anyone to talk to. I’m jumping off the corporate circus and moving toward simplicity and entrepreneurship. I’m striving to be a voice for women who aren’t heard or that feel invisible.

“and I really hope no white person ever has cause to write about me because they never understand Black love is Black wealth and they’ll probably talk about my hard childhood and never understand that all the while I was quite happy” -Nikki Giovanni

Ms60sMom — I am a mother, grandmother, lover, and friend.  I am navigating new stock-vector-business-woman-african-american-woman-holding-something-in-her-hand-such-as-document-card-pen-110834480waters as an empty nester and finding my way since ‘life’ got in the way of my journey.  I’ve lived and loved and have plenty to say about it all.  I enjoy life because I really can care less who around me is not happy.  Life is meant to be enjoyed and I plan to live every moment as if it’s my last.  I didn’t always feel this way, in fact, it has been my life’s journey and experiences that have given me my carefree attitude.  You can’t live with regret because that is not living at all.  I hope by you reading the journey I have taken, you get to a place of ‘no regret, just live’ attitude also.
